Austria for the Win

What I’m drinking this week:

Before flying to Boston this week, I made a pit stop in L.A. to check out the Boner Burger (bone marrow burger) and other unique food items at Animal. The menu did not disappoint, nor did the wine list and I opted to go with a vibrant frizzante rose from the beautiful country of Austria, the Meinklang “Prosa” . The grapes for this sparkling wine are grown on a biodynamic farm in Burgenland, Austria. A blend of Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, and Zweigelt, this wine features strawberry and rich floral notes that harmoniously match the gorgeous pink color. The wine is dry with a pleasant effervescence, which, combined with the bright flavors, makes for a very drinkable rose. I paired it with the ground chuck, short rib, bone marrow burger, topped with Jack cheese, caramelized onion, and secret sauce, nicely packaged in a marble rye sandwich. This wine screams for a nice cheese and charcuterie board, eaten outside on a sunny day. Since I won’t be back to Animal anytime soon, I’ll likely go that direction next time around.

Austrian Wines:

If you’ve stayed in your safe lane with wines like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, I urge you to step out of your comfort zone and give some Austrian varietals a try. Austria produces excellent wines, revered by the wine community, many of which are imported by Germany as well as other European countries. In the great state of California, it’s easy to be intimidated by names like Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt, and Blaufränkisch, but once you give them a try, I guarantee you’ll be a fan for life. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, give the Grüner Veltliner a try. On the red side, the Zweigelt is bursting with juicy cherry flavor that will leave you saying , “Pinot Noir who?”. The Blaufränkisch is a little more difficult to compare to another varietal, but if you like a medium red with higher acidity and prominent tannins, give this one a shot. The Blaufränkisch is best aged to smooth out some of the harsher characteristics and is a great wine with food. Reach out to your favorite wine retailer or give me a shout for some great recommendations.
